We interviewed the staff of fi ve community cafes in Kyoto, Fukuoka, and Tokyo about the revenue base, involvement with other organizations, and ways of gathering people via in-person visits and the telephone. As a result of a qualitative analysis, we identifi ed 14 characteristics in the community cafes which have been active for over three years. These characteristics were summarized in fi ve items: equipment, fi nance, cooperation with the area, awareness of staff, and program/content.
